Prosecution to Request Extension of Yoon's Detention Today
Face-to-Face Investigation at Detention Center Expected This Weekend
The prosecution, which took over the case of President Yoon Seok-yeol from the High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Unit (PCC), plans to apply for an extension of President Yoon's detention period on the 24th to continue the follow-up investigation. The Special Investigation Headquarters for Emergency Martial Law of the Prosecution (Head: Park Se-hyun, Chief Prosecutor of Seoul High Prosecutors' Office) is expected to apply to the court for an extension of President Yoon's detention period on the morning of the same day. The extension request is likely to be made to the Seoul Central District Court.
After obtaining the court's approval for the extension of the detention period, the prosecution is expected to conduct a face-to-face investigation of President Yoon. There is a prospect that the investigation could begin as early as the weekend for a swift inquiry. If the court denies the extension of the detention period, the prosecution must indict immediately, so it is reported that they are preparing for such a scenario as well. Considering the cases of former presidents who were detained, the investigation of President Yoon is likely to be conducted by chief prosecutors visiting the Seoul Detention Center where President Yoon is held, rather than summoning him to the prosecution office, due to security and protection concerns.
Yoon's lawyer, Yoon Gap-geun, said to reporters after concluding the Constitutional Court impeachment trial arguments the day before, when asked whether they would comply with the prosecution's request to visit the detention center for investigation, "There are still many factors to consider, including the prosecution's investigative attitude."
