Gwangju City announced on the 24th that it will strengthen legal support to ensure that local youth do not suffer economic hardship due to the "inheritance of parental debt" and can grow into healthy members of society.
To this end, the city signed a "Legal Support Agreement to Prevent the Inheritance of Parental Debt for Children and Youth in Gwangju" the previous day with the Gwangju branch of the Korea Legal Aid Corporation, the Gwangju branch of the Korea Family Legal Welfare Counseling Center, and the Western Regional Headquarters of Save the Children.
Through this agreement, the organizations will establish a cooperative system to provide legal support services to prevent the inheritance of parental debt for all children and youth under the age of 24 residing in Gwangju, regardless of income. In addition, they plan to continuously expand welfare services to protect the rights of youth.
According to the agreement, the city will handle project promotion, planning, application reception, and coordination. The Gwangju branch of the Korea Legal Aid Corporation will provide free legal services and cover legal expenses to prevent the inheritance of parental debt for youth whose household income is at or below 125% of the median income. The Gwangju branch of the Korea Family Legal Welfare Counseling Center will provide free legal services to those exceeding 125% of the median income, while the Western Regional Headquarters of Save the Children will cover legal expenses.
Lee Youngdong, Director of the Department of Women and Family, stated, "Through this agreement, we expect to provide seamless legal support services to children and youth who lack legal knowledge," and emphasized, "We will continue to build a robust welfare safety net so that children and youth can grow into healthy members of society."
