The number of births in Suwon City, Gyeonggi Province, last year increased by 8.97% compared to 2023.
Suwon City announced on the 23rd that the number of births last year was 6,575, an increase of 541 from 6,034 the previous year. This figure is nearly three times the national average growth rate of 3.1% last year. It is also the highest growth rate among special cities with populations over one million.
The number of births in Suwon City had been declining every year since 2018 but rebounded last year.
Suwon City established a Low Birth Response Team in January last year and a Women and Family Bureau in January this year to address the low birthrate issue. Additionally, the city recently introduced a Childcare Support Work System to help public officials balance work and childcare.
The Childcare Support Work System expands flexible working hours and provides incentives to public officials who cover the duties of those receiving childcare support benefits.
A Suwon City official stated, "The increase in the number of births last year is understood to be due to Suwon City's proactive support measures and the rise in marriages after COVID-19," adding, "We will establish and actively implement population policy plans to ensure the birthrate continues to rise steadily."
