Mokpo City’s 'Port Festival' Selected as Jeonnam’s Best Representative Festival

Challenging to Become a 'Global Festival'
Through Differentiated Content

Mokpo City, South Jeolla Province (Mayor Park Hongryul), announced on the 21st that the 'Mokpo Port Festival' has been selected as the best representative festival for 2025 in the Jeonnam Provincial City and County Representative Festival Selection Review.

This selection was the result of a comprehensive evaluation by South Jeolla Province of the competitiveness and growth potential of local festivals among 21 city and county festivals, based on on-site and presentation evaluations conducted last year.

The Mokpo Port Festival received high scores in evaluation categories such as content, organizational capabilities, and safety management system, earning its place as the top representative festival of Jeonnam. With this selection, the city will receive 50 million KRW in provincial funding, which will be used for domestic and international promotion and festival program development, aiming to elevate the quality of festival content and strengthen tourism readiness.

The Mokpo Port Festival, held in October last year, received great acclaim by featuring 'Pasi,' Korea's only maritime fish market culture, as its main content, offering a variety of food, entertainment, and attractions.

The festival's signature program, the traditional Pasi auction, provided participants with the experience of purchasing seasonal seafood caught by full-loaded fishing boats through an auction, gaining significant popularity. In addition, the festival promoted the abundance of the full-loaded port through various programs such as the full-loaded boat parade, grilled seafood experience zone, 1897 Beer & Makgeolli Zone, and Mokpo Gourmet Festa in the Port.

In particular, by expanding the festival area to Mokpo General Fishery Market and the Dried Fish & Min-eo Street, visitor numbers increased significantly, which is credited with greatly contributing to revitalizing the local economy. Furthermore, by differentiating its port content, the festival was also selected as a '2024-2025 Culture and Tourism Festival' by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism last year.

Mayor Park Hongryul stated, "Thanks to the participation and love of our citizens, the Mokpo Port Festival continues to grow and develop each year," and added, "We will do our best to further develop unique content together with local residents so that the festival can become a global event."
