On the 21st, Yangsan City in Gyeongnam Province, together with the Gyeongnam Provincial Office of Education, conducted an on-site inspection of the construction progress and school opening preparations for Yangsan Artificial Intelligence High School, the first specialized high school in Yangsan City, scheduled to open in March.

Yangsan Artificial Intelligence High School, which began construction in June 2023, is a specialized high school focused on advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology. It is being built on a 17,104㎡ site at 1452-2 Geumsan-ri, Dong-myeon, with a four-story building above ground covering a total area of 19,905㎡. The school is set to be completed by the end of January and open in March.

Considering the local industrial characteristics and development strategies, Yangsan Artificial Intelligence High School plans to operate as an AI-specialized school linked to the smart manufacturing sector. It will have four departments: AI Convergence Factory, AI Automatic Control Systems, AI Content, and Bio Food, accommodating 378 students in 21 coeducational classes.

In addition to the main school building and multipurpose auditorium, the school is equipped with practical training rooms featuring advanced equipment related to AI, the core of smart factories, allowing students to utilize AI technologies in real corporate environments.

The on-site inspection was attended by over 40 officials from Yangsan City, the Gyeongnam Provincial Office of Education, and the Yangsan Education Support Office, including Mayor Na Dong-yeon and Superintendent Park Jong-hoon. They received reports from the chief supervisor and the Gyeongnam Office of Education inspector on the final stages of construction and school opening preparations, followed by a tour of the construction site to check progress.

Mayor Na Dong-yeon stated, “Our city has actively worked on establishing this specialized high school, which has been a long-standing local wish, through various efforts such as site selection, public opinion gathering for basic planning, signing a support agreement, and operating a specialized high school establishment committee. We plan to fully support Yangsan Artificial Intelligence High School so that it becomes a cradle for nurturing essential talent for our city’s future industries.”

Yangsan City plans to enhance the capabilities of current students at Yangsan Artificial Intelligence High School by linking with the ‘Gyeongnam-type Future Development Industry Education Special Zone’ project. This includes operating AI technology courses applied to future automobiles, supporting special vacation project practice, and providing field training at local industries. Additionally, the city will separately provide 100 million KRW annually for ten years starting in 2025 to support curriculum operation costs.

In the November admissions for new students last year, 302 applicants competed for 126 spots at Yangsan Artificial Intelligence High School (2 classes for AI Convergence Factory, 2 classes for AI Automatic Control Systems, 2 classes for AI Content, and 1 class for Bio Food, totaling 7 classes across 4 departments), resulting in a competition ratio of 2.61 to 1.
