Damyang County, South Jeolla Province (Governor Lee Byungno), announced on the 21st that it held a groundbreaking ceremony for the reconstruction of the Changpyeong Traditional Market on the 20th.

The ceremony was attended by Governor Lee Byungno, National Assembly member Lee Gaeho, Damyang County Council Chairperson Jeong Cheolwon, South Jeolla Provincial Council members Park Jongwon and Lee Gyuhyeon, county council members, Changpyeong Market Merchants Association President Jo Seongsun, and about 150 others.

After a fire in December 2022, the Changpyeong Market had been operating with a temporary market and parking lot. In 2023, 6 billion KRW was secured for the modernization of the traditional market facilities, and last year, 3.8 billion KRW was secured for tourism resource development. With a total project cost of 9.8 billion KRW (5.5 billion from the province and 4.3 billion from the county), the reconstruction is now underway.

The newly constructed Changpyeong Market will be located at 209-1 Changpyeong-ri, Changpyeong-myeon, covering 3,504 square meters (1,060 pyeong), with two above-ground floors and a total floor area of 2,760 square meters (835 pyeong). The project aims to establish the market as a central hub for local commerce and a representative tourist attraction in connection with surrounding tourist sites.

The first floor will feature 44 general shops, rest facilities (including a lounge for pregnant women), and a cultural complex space (courtyard). The second floor will include six youth mall shops, a management office, restrooms, and an observation deck (a corridor with outdoor views).

Following the groundbreaking ceremony, Governor Lee, along with local residents, public officials, and about 150 participants, held a shopping event at the temporary Changpyeong Market ahead of the national holiday, Seollal.

On this day, Governor Lee encouraged small business owners struggling with decreased consumption and checked the price trends of major holiday goods to help stabilize the local economy. He also led a price stabilization campaign, inspected the implementation of the country-of-origin labeling system, and took the lead in establishing fair trade practices. On the 22nd, a shopping event is planned at Damyang Market, and various support measures for livelihood stability will continue to be implemented.

Earlier, to promote the use of traditional markets, the county raised the monthly purchase limit per person for Damyang Love paper gift certificates from 200,000 KRW to 500,000 KRW for the month of January.

Governor Lee stated, "We will focus our administrative efforts so that the newly renovated Changpyeong Market can become a central hub for local commerce and a representative attraction that enriches the lives of residents and revitalizes the local economy. As the holiday approaches, I ask all residents to actively use traditional markets so that they and local shopping districts are filled with vitality."
