Focusing on Strength Development through Bilingual and Korean Language Education

The Jeonnam Office of Education is strengthening bilingual education to leverage the strengths of students from migrant backgrounds and to help Jeonnam students pioneer glocal career paths.

On the 20th, the Office held a meeting at Boseong Davichi Condo with heads and officials from the education support departments of 22 regional education offices to discuss ways to realize 'Glocal Jeonnam Education.'

During the meeting, participants shared specific business plans for the newly established Glocal Education Cooperation Division and discussed support measures for students from migrant backgrounds, including bilingual education, customized Korean language education, international exchange, and foreign language education.

The Office of Education plans to promote the development of strengths among students from migrant backgrounds and realize community coexistence by strengthening Korean language education, revitalizing bilingual education, fostering multicultural sensitivity, and establishing a community-based support system. Since launching the 'Jeonnam Multicultural Education Transformation' in 2023, the number of bilingual clubs has expanded from 37 to 60 teams. The Office has also systematically supported students' bilingual competencies by operating 24 university student DREAM ON mentoring teams for bilingual education and 9 policy schools for developing strengths in multicultural education.

The 'DREAM ON Mentoring' program, which began last year, pairs international students from countries such as Vietnam and China with students from migrant backgrounds for one-on-one native language learning and cultural exchange. The program achieved significant results in its first year, and the Office plans to expand it further this year.

Customized Korean language education to help students from migrant backgrounds adapt to school will also be strengthened. Since last year, the Office has provided systematic Korean language education to newly arrived students through regional hub Korean language preparatory courses. This year, support for language adaptation will continue through the operation of Korean language classes (13 classes) in special policy school classes, traveling Korean language education, and intensive regional Korean language programs.

Kim Jongman, Director of the Glocal Education Cooperation Division, stated, "The number of mid-arrival and foreign students in Jeonnam is steadily increasing every year. We will spare no effort in providing tailored support focused on strength development so that students from migrant backgrounds can adapt and grow stably in Jeonnam."
