Guri Sutaek-dong, Gyeonggi-do's 'The Dream Regeneration Project' Officially Launched

The 'The Dream Regeneration Project' in Sutaek-dong, Guri-si, Gyeonggi-do will officially commence this year.

The Dream Regeneration Project is a Gyeonggi-do-style urban regeneration initiative under the 8th term of local government, spearheaded by Governor Kim Dong-yeon. It focuses on revitalizing aging original downtown areas excluded from redevelopment plans in first-generation new towns and other old planned cities.

Sutaek-dong was designated as a redevelopment promotion area in 2007 but was delisted in 2013. Due to nearby redevelopment and reconstruction projects, residents have felt relatively neglected, conflicts among residents have intensified, and population and commercial districts have declined, accelerating the deterioration of the original downtown. Additionally, aging buildings and infrastructure, along with a lack of resident convenience facilities, have created an urgent need for urban regeneration to improve the environment.

The project site is centered around Inchangcheon, where the Inchangcheon Ecological Stream Restoration Project and the extension of Subway Line 8 are underway. Gyeonggi-do is concerned about rapid changes in the area due to multiple ongoing projects and plans to proactively respond to ensure harmonious landscape and environmental management with the surroundings.

The urban regeneration project in Sutaek-dong, Guri-si will implement various initiatives according to the execution plan, including ▲operation of the Inchangcheon ecological program ▲environmental maintenance linked to the ecological stream ▲promotion and marketing support for Suridan-gil ▲creation of specialized streets ▲and capacity building for resident and merchant organizations.

Key projects include training resident ecological guides and developing ecological experience programs in connection with the Inchangcheon Ecological Stream Restoration Project, scheduled for completion in 2026. By linking the area's unique characteristics and commercial features, the project aims to foster Suridan-gil as a specialized street, laying the foundation for revitalizing the local economy.

An Seong-hyun, head of the Gyeonggi-do Regeneration Planning Team, stated, "This project will be the first step for Guri-si to create a sustainable city together with local residents," adding, "We will actively cooperate with city and county governments to ensure the project's successful progress."
