Professor Son developed and advanced AI technology for predicting future water vapor distribution and precipitation using data from the Cheollian Satellite 2A, and improved global greenhouse gas distribution prediction technology by analyzing data from foreign low Earth orbit satellites. The Cheollian Satellite 2A is a geostationary satellite that plays a key role in South Korea's weather observation, collecting and producing atmospheric information such as water vapor, clouds, and aerosols from multiple perspectives.
Professor Son incorporated dry region information of lower atmospheric water vapor observed by the Cheollian Satellite 2A into the AI model, enabling precise tracking of the formation and dissipation processes of water vapor and clouds, which were difficult to predict in the past. The AI was designed to prioritize meteorologically important infrared channels and CAPE indices while autonomously learning image patterns, significantly improving precipitation prediction accuracy.
Professor Son said, "This commendation recognizes the diverse potential applications of AI technology in the meteorology and environmental fields. Moving forward, I will continue to integrate meteorological knowledge with advanced AI technology to contribute to future weather variable prediction and strengthening climate change response capabilities."
