Jeongeup City in North Jeolla Province will conduct food safety inspections at traditional markets and large supermarkets until the 24th in preparation for the Lunar New Year.

According to the city on the 17th, this inspection has been arranged to prevent the distribution of illegal and substandard food at traditional markets and large supermarkets ahead of the holiday, and to ensure the safe consumption of Ssanghwa tea, which sees increased demand during winter.

The inspection will be carried out jointly by the city health center and consumer food hygiene inspectors, with a total of two teams comprising nine members.

They will focus on managing 23 large supermarkets and other food retailers, 89 instant sales and manufacturing businesses within traditional markets, and 25 food service establishments selling Ssanghwa tea.

The main inspection items include: ▲compliance by business operators ▲cleanliness of raw material storage, manufacturing, processing, and packaging rooms ▲sale of expired food products ▲appropriateness of raw material use ▲sale of illegal or substandard food ▲hygienic handling of food, among others.

Additionally, the city plans to secure food safety for citizens by collecting and testing frequently consumed foods and health functional foods.

In particular, for hygiene-vulnerable areas such as traditional markets, the focus will be on guidance, enlightenment, and education rather than administrative crackdowns, aiming to improve hygiene standards and enhance the safety of food sold.

Business operators selling Ssanghwa tea are also being encouraged to strengthen quality control and hygiene, helping to leave a positive impression on tourists visiting Jeongeup.

Son Heekyung, Director of the Health Center, said, "We will do our utmost to ensure the safety of holiday foods so that citizens can enjoy a pleasant and worry-free Lunar New Year," adding, "We hope this inspection will also contribute positively to revitalizing the local economy."
