‘Yangju City Jang Uk-jin Art Museum’ Acquires Two Representative Works by Jang Uk-jin’s Disciples (Im Chung-seop ‘Untitled-1000 Watts’ and Kim Jong-hak ‘Portrait of Jang Uk-jin’). Provided by Yangju City
Kim Jong-hak and Im Chung-seop formed a mentor-mentee relationship with Jang Uk-jin (張旭鎭, 1917?1990) when he was an associate professor at Seoul National University College of Fine Arts, and they also worked together in the art group "Engagement," the only art organization Jang Uk-jin participated in after the 1960s.
The donated works are titled "Portrait of Jang Uk-jin" and "Untitled-1000 Watts," created in tribute to their mentor and senior, Jang Uk-jin.
Kim Jong-hak’s "Portrait of Jang Uk-jin (oil on hardboard, 30.5×41 cm, 1970s)" captures and depicts Jang Uk-jin’s artistic struggles and anguish, while Im Chung-seop’s "Untitled-1000 Watts (mixed media, 136×41×15 cm, 2000)" reflects the attitude toward nature and the environment learned from Jang Uk-jin.
These donated works, imbued with respect and admiration for Jang Uk-jin, are important pieces that reveal his personal character and how he formed human relationships, holding high art historical value.
A representative from Yangju City stated, “These two works, filled with the artists’ sincerity, are highly valuable for research and exhibition planning related to Jang Uk-jin’s life and art,” and expressed gratitude to artists Kim Jong-hak and Im Chung-seop for their generous donation.
Meanwhile, detailed information about the collected works can be found on the "Yangju Jang Uk-jin Museum of Art website."
