"Sixteen Months After Filing the Complaint,
No Action Taken by the Prosecution"
Lee Kangsun, a member of the Seocheon County Council in Chungnam (Democratic Party), has urged a swift investigation by the prosecution into Lee Jihye, a fellow council member from the People Power Party, who is suspected of secretly recording and distributing conversations with other council members.
On the 15th, Lee stated that he had submitted a petition to the Hongseong Branch of the Daejeon District Prosecutors' Office, requesting a prompt investigation and strict punishment for Lee Jihye and two others.
Previously, on June 28, 2023, the Seocheon Police Station referred Lee Jihye to the prosecution with a recommendation for indictment on charges of violating the Protection of Communications Secrets Act, for secretly recording conversations among fellow council members at a restaurant.
Lee emphasized, "The charge of violating the Protection of Communications Secrets Act is a very straightforward case," adding, "Lee Jihye distributed the recorded file to person A, who then passed it on to person B, a representative of a local civic group. It was confirmed during the police investigation that person B disseminated the recorded conversation to the media and posted it on online forums."
However, he pointed out, "If you search the Criminal Justice Portal website from July 1 last year until now, it only states that a certain prosecutor is investigating the case."
Lee further stated, "Lee Jihye has a history of repeatedly refusing police summons, and while claiming that the secret recording was an act for the public good, she not only shows no remorse but also justifies the crime with false claims."
He continued, "It has been 16 months since I filed the complaint against Lee Jihye, and I am curious as to why the prosecution has taken no action."
He added, "Seeing the perpetrators walk around society without any apology or remorse makes me question whether our country is truly governed by the rule of law," and urged, "Please conduct a swift investigation and impose strict punishment for the perpetrators' criminal acts."
