Inje Nam-myeon, Buk-myeon, Yanggu, and Yeongwol Selected
Securing 73 Billion KRW in Government Support

Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Kim Jin-tae) announced on the 15th that it applied for four locations in Inje (Nam-myeon and Buk-myeon), Yanggu, and Yeongwol in the second half of 2024 ‘Specialized Public Rental Housing Construction Project Contest’ conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, achieving a 100% selection rate. By being selected in the contest, a total of 73.1 billion KRW in government support funds (national funds, LH funds) were secured: 51.1 billion KRW for Inje-gun (36.5 billion KRW for Nam-myeon, 14.6 billion KRW for Buk-myeon), 20.4 billion KRW for Yanggu-gun, and 1.6 billion KRW for Yeongwol-gun.

The ‘Specialized Public Rental Housing Construction Project’ was divided into ▲region-proposed specialized housing, ▲elderly welfare housing, ▲job-linked support housing, and ▲youth specialized housing. In this contest, Inje-gun (Nam-myeon and Buk-myeon) was selected for region-proposed specialized housing, Yanggu-gun for elderly welfare housing, and Yeongwol-gun for job-linked housing, respectively.

The region-proposed specialized housing in Nam-myeon, Inje-gun, is a project directly proposed to the governor by local military personnel and the Inje-gun governor to support the settlement of military personnel in the area. Through this project, it is expected to resolve the long-distance commuting difficulties and economic burdens of military personnel who currently have no housing support.

The region-proposed specialized housing in Buk-myeon, Inje-gun, will be the first case of constructing public rental housing by lifting the absolute farmland designation in an agricultural promotion zone.

The elderly welfare housing in Yanggu-gun will be built within the ‘Yanggu Station Area Sports Administration Complex Town’ district, which was selected in the 2023 Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s investment-leading district contest.

The job-linked support housing in Yeongwol-gun is being promoted to improve the living conditions of workers in local industrial complexes and small and medium-sized enterprises, and it is expected to contribute to revitalizing the local economy through job creation and population inflow.

To be selected in this contest, Gangwon Province cooperated with cities and counties, LH, related organizations, and local district lawmakers, responding systematically and strategically by emphasizing the necessity of construction through prior consulting and consultations with central government departments.

Kim Soon-ha, Director of the Architecture Division of Gangwon Province, said, “This project will provide housing, childcare spaces, social welfare facilities, and workspaces to various groups such as military personnel, youth, newlyweds, elderly, and local workers, allowing residents to enjoy benefits beyond twofold.” He added, “We will continue to do our best to improve the residential environment that helps respond to population decline and overcome the risk of regional extinction.”

Meanwhile, the ongoing elderly welfare housing project is being promoted in 14 locations (1,446 units) across 10 cities and counties in the province (Chuncheon, Wonju, Taebaek, Donghae, Hongcheon, Hoengseong, Yeongwol, Pyeongchang, Hwacheon, Inje). The job-linked support housing project is underway in 3 locations (160 units) across 3 cities and counties (Hoengseong, Hongcheon, Yeongwol), and the region-proposed specialized housing project, which is being implemented for the first time, will also be actively promoted together with cities and counties.
