Incheon Seo-gu to Rename Bangwiseok... 69% of Residents Positive About Autonomous District Name Change

In preparation for the administrative system reform scheduled for July next year, Seo-gu, Incheon, will hold a public contest from the 20th to the 31st to change the name of the autonomous district.

Seo-gu decided to officially proceed with the contest process based on the results of a resident opinion survey on the district name change, which showed 69.5% positive and 23% negative responses.

The naming contest is open to all citizens aged 18 and older. However, each person can submit only one name, and applications can be made online through the Seo-gu website or email. Seo-gu plans to select the final name around March after conducting a name preference survey and gathering residents' opinions based on the contest results, and then propose it to Incheon City.

The administrative reform of Incheon was finalized last January with the enactment of the "Act on the Establishment of Jemulpo-gu, Yeongjong-gu, and Geomdan-gu in Incheon."

Accordingly, from July 1 next year, the current Jung-gu and Dong-gu will be reorganized into Yeongjong-gu, centered on Yeongjong Island, and Jemulpo-gu, covering the inland areas of Jung-gu and Dong-gu. Seo-gu will separate the Geomdan area to create the new Geomdan-gu, while the remaining area of Seo-gu will remain unchanged.

Kang Beom-seok, head of Seo-gu Office, said, "'Seo-gu' is the last directional name remaining in Incheon," adding, "Through the name change, we aim to enhance residents' sense of belonging and promote urban development."
