People Power Party Holds Emergency Assembly Meeting Immediately After Yoon's Arrest
On the 15th, Kwon Seong-dong, floor leader of the People Power Party, expressed deep regret and apologized for the "tragic situation that has unfolded, damaging the nation's dignity," regarding the arrest of President Yoon Seok-yeol by the National Police Agency's National Investigation Headquarters (Guksubon) and the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (Gongsucheo).
At an emergency party meeting held at the National Assembly that morning, Floor Leader Kwon said, "Is this an arrest for the sake of investigation, or an investigation for the sake of arrest? I want to ask who exactly this upheaval that has turned the entire country upside down over the past two weeks is for, and whether this is truly for the country and its people," criticizing the situation.
He continued, "An unimaginable event occurred in broad daylight in 2025," adding, "It is shameful to the people. The nation's dignity has been destroyed." He then questioned, "I want to ask Gongsucheo Chief Oh Dong-woon, National Investigation Headquarters Chief Woo Jong-su, Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung, and floor leader Park Chan-dae if they now feel relieved."
Regarding the series of processes involving the application, issuance, and execution of warrants by Gongsucheo and the police, he stated, "History will surely record that 'unjust and illegal warrants were executed,' 'the judiciary participated in such illegal warrant executions,' and 'the opposition party intimidated Gongsucheo and Guksubon.'"
This statement reiterated the claims of President Yoon’s side and the People Power Party that Gongsucheo, which lacks authority to investigate treason, applied for the warrant at the Seoul Western District Court instead of the Seoul Central District Court, which has jurisdiction, and obtained a search warrant excluding certain legal provisions from a warrant judge, then executed it.
Regarding the injury of a person during the execution of the arrest warrant, he pointed out, "It is reported that a citizen was injured during the forced execution of the warrant by Gongsucheo and Guksubon. We wish for a speedy recovery," and added, "We will hold Gongsucheo and Guksubon legally accountable for causing harm to a citizen."
