Pyeongtaek Wonpyeong-dong Urban Regeneration Project Breaks Ground in January

The regeneration project in Wonpyeong-dong, Pyeongtaek-si, Gyeonggi-do, will break ground later this month.

On the 15th, Gyeonggi-do announced that it will carry out various projects in Wonpyeong-dong, Pyeongtaek-si, which was selected for the 'The Dream Regeneration Project' last year, including ▲ revitalization of local commercial alleys ▲ improvement of aging residential areas and support for home repairs ▲ operation of the Wonpyeong Community Workshop as a hub space and youth vitality programs for residents.

The Dream Regeneration Project is an urban regeneration initiative led by resident communities proposing various ideas tailored to local conditions. It is a Gyeonggi-do style urban regeneration project under the 8th term of Governor Kim Dong-yeon, focusing on revitalizing old downtown areas.

Although the area around Wonpyeong-dong is within the station district of Pyeongtaek Station, disparities with surrounding areas have deepened. Old stores and shops are scattered, preventing the formation of a commercial district that can attract consumers. Narrow alleys in densely packed aging residential areas, illegal parking, and a lack of parks and green spaces have led to a continuous deterioration of the residential environment.

Accordingly, Gyeonggi-do has set three main goals: regional economic regeneration, residential environment regeneration, and community regeneration, and will implement detailed projects annually to achieve these goals.

First, to regenerate the regional economy, support will be provided for merchant capacity-building education and merchant association organization consulting, along with lifestyle convenience services such as shopping cards, tool rentals, and electronic device charging. Additionally, an alley festival will be held to attract visitors and revitalize the commercial district.

Furthermore, through residential environment regeneration, improvements to alley environments in densely packed aging residential areas and support for home repairs will be concentrated. For community regeneration, the Wonpyeong Community Workshop, a field support center, will be operated mainly by youth organizations.

An Seong-hyun, head of the Regeneration Planning Team at Gyeonggi-do, stated, "Based on the geographical advantage of the station district in Wonpyeong-dong, we will discover project stakeholders such as residents, youth, companies, and organizations, and support them to strengthen their capabilities."
