Three-Year Prison Sentence in First Trial
Prosecution's Demand Not Met Even by Half
"Heavier Sentence Deemed Necessary"
The prosecution filed an appeal on the 13th against the club president who was sentenced to three years in prison in the first trial for purchasing and using drugs in a joint club composed of students from prestigious universities in the Seoul metropolitan area.
The Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office stated, "We judged that a heavier sentence is necessary," and submitted the appeal to the Seoul Southern District Court on the same day. The prosecution explained the reason for the appeal, saying, "We seek a heavier sentence commensurate with the culpability and aim to correct the factual and legal errors in the acquittal regarding the false accusation of the coin laundering operator."
Earlier, the Criminal Division 14 of the Seoul Southern District Court (Chief Judge Jang Seong-hoon) sentenced Yeom Mo (32), who was indicted for violating the Narcotics Control Act, to three years in prison on the 8th. In addition, Yeom was ordered to pay a fine of 13,426,000 won and complete 40 hours each of drug addiction rehabilitation education and sexual violence treatment programs. This was less than half of the prosecution's requested sentence of seven years in prison.
Previously, Yeom and others were arrested and indicted in July last year on charges of distributing and using drugs collectively for about a year from the end of 2022, while leading the activities of a joint club formed mainly by students from 13 prestigious universities in the Seoul metropolitan area. A prosecution official stated, "We will continue to respond strictly to drug crimes to protect the public and society safely from crime."
