Muan International Airport Runway Closure Extended for 5 Days Until Early Morning of the 19th

The closure period of Jeollanam-do Muan International Airport due to the Jeju Air passenger plane accident has been extended by five more days.

Muan International Airport Runway Closure Extended for 5 Days Until Early Morning of the 19th Yonhap News

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's aviation notice (NOTAM) on the 13th, the Muan Airport runway closure period has been extended until 5 a.m. on the 19th (Korean Standard Time). This is the third extension of the Muan Airport runway closure period. Initially, it was temporarily closed until the morning of the 1st following the accident on the 29th of last month, then extended to the 7th, and again to the 14th. The closure extension appears to be due to ongoing search and investigation at the accident site.

The joint investigation team, including the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board (ARAIB) and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), has been conducting on-site investigations for 14 days since the 31st of last month. It is highly likely that the runway closure period will be extended again. This is because time is needed to complete the on-site investigation and to repair airport facilities damaged by the accident, such as the localizer navigation aid.

Currently, one Jin Air B737-800 passenger plane (HL8012) that arrived at Muan from Taipei, Taiwan on the day of the accident is grounded due to the runway closure at Muan Airport and cannot operate flights.
