Gwangju Nam-gu to Conduct Detailed Safety Inspection
A building in Nam-gu, Gwangju has tilted due to aging and the construction of Subway Line 2, prompting the local government to take safety measures.
According to Nam-gu officials in Gwangju on the 13th, a complaint was filed on the 13th of last month regarding a three-story building in Bangnim-dong, Nam-gu, which was reported to be leaning.
After sending staff from the Building Safety Center to inspect the site, it was visually confirmed that the commercial building was tilting toward the Subway Line 2 construction site. The building, approved for use in 1987 with a total floor area of 148 square meters, houses businesses such as snack bars and offices, and also has residents.
No specific damage has occurred as a result of the tilting, but Nam-gu has taken safety measures since the building is old and subway construction is ongoing nearby.
The Urban Railway Construction Headquarters was requested to install measuring devices to monitor the building's tilt and to conduct a detailed safety inspection. So far, no abnormal displacement has been detected by the instruments. The owner of the commercial building, who manages the property, has also been asked to provide ongoing management.
A Nam-gu official stated, "Depending on the results of the inspection, we will order administrative actions such as restricting use or demolition if the building is deemed dangerous. Emergency housing support has been provided to the resident on the third floor, and the district will conduct regular on-site inspections."
