Ulsan City, First Public Corporation to Receive Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award for Ulsan Urban Corporation

‘World’s First’ Carbon-Neutral Eco-Friendly Hydrogen Apartment Realized
Hydrogen City Development, Leap Toward an Eco-Friendly Future Hydrogen City Expected

Ulsan Urban Corporation was recognized for its contribution to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s ‘Hydrogen Pilot City Development Project’ and received the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award.

Accordingly, on the 13th at 3:40 PM, Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom of Ulsan City presented the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s institutional commendation to Yoon Doo-hwan, President of Ulsan Urban Corporation, at the mayor’s office on the 7th floor of the city hall main building.

This project is an initiative by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, which in 2019 selected three locations including Ulsan City, Ansan in Gyeonggi Province, and Wanju in Jeonbuk Province to build an integrated hydrogen ecosystem encompassing hydrogen production, transportation, and utilization, and to promote urban innovation using hydrogen as an energy source.

The award received by Ulsan Urban Corporation is the result of the institution’s efforts toward sustainable urban development and eco-friendly energy transition, and it is evaluated as having greatly contributed to establishing Ulsan as a hub of the hydrogen economy.

Notably, it is the first award received among the 12 local government-invested public enterprises nationwide that are promoting the Hydrogen Pilot City Development Project, making its significance even greater.

Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom stated, “This award is the fruit of Ulsan City’s efforts to lead the hydrogen economy era and is expected to serve as a milestone in providing Ulsan citizens with a healthier and cleaner city. We will continue to do our best together with Ulsan Urban Corporation to establish Ulsan as a center of energy innovation.”

Since January 2020, Ulsan Urban Corporation has been responsible for executing the Ulsan-type hydrogen city project, focusing its capabilities on building housing, transportation, and infrastructure through cooperation with local residents and research institutions, as well as integrated hydrogen safety management.

They connected the hydrogen pipelines (188 km) built mainly around industrial complexes through Taehwagang Station to the Yuldong hydrogen fuel cell combined heat and power plant (10.5 km) in Yangjeong-dong, Buk-gu.

The electricity produced from hydrogen at the Yuldong combined heat and power plant is sold to Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), and the waste heat generated is supplied as hot water and heating to 437 households in the Yuldong district apartment complex, realizing the world’s first carbon-neutral hydrogen apartment with zero greenhouse gas emissions.

Additionally, hydrogen pipelines were connected to hydrogen bus and Line 1 hydrogen tram charging stations centered around Taehwagang Station, as well as the Taehwagang Station hydrogen charging station, establishing a seamless eco-friendly hydrogen urban transportation system and building a full-cycle infrastructure that differentiates Ulsan from other cities.

Within the Yuldong district hydrogen fuel cell combined heat and power plant, an ‘Integrated Safety Management Center’ was established, applying new technologies to the safety management of hydrogen and pipelines, contributing to alleviating citizens’ concerns about hydrogen through the safe construction and operation of the hydrogen city.

Furthermore, a hydrogen exhibition hall was installed inside the Ulsan Tourist Information Center at Taehwagang Station, allowing citizens to directly observe the use of hydrogen energy, increasing public acceptance and providing a venue for hydrogen energy experiential education for elementary, middle, and high school children and youth.
