Recommendation Authority for Special Prosecutor Candidates Delegated to Chief Justice, Not Political Parties
Scope of Investigation Expanded to Include President Yoon Suk-yeol's Foreign Exchange Allegations
Ruling Party Protests and Boycotts Meeting
On the 10th, the opposition party approved the 'Special Investigation Law on Treason' with a third-party recommendation method at the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee's Bill Review Subcommittee 1. If the special investigation law passes the full meeting of the Judiciary Committee on the 13th, it is expected to be submitted to the plenary session next week.
The bill was jointly proposed by six opposition parties, including the Democratic Party. The core of the bill is to entrust the recommendation right of the special investigator candidates to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, rather than to the ruling or opposition parties.
In this special investigation law, the opposition party's veto right to request re-nomination of special investigator candidates was excluded. Additionally, the investigative personnel were reduced from the initially planned 205 to 155, and the preparation period and the total investigation period were shortened from 170 days to 150 days, respectively.
The scope of investigation newly includes allegations of foreign exchange offenses by President Yoon Seok-yeol. This grants the authority to investigate suspicions that the president attempted to provoke war or armed conflict through dispatching troops to disputed areas, operating loudspeakers toward North Korea, and distributing leaflets.
The ruling party, People Power Party, strongly opposed the opposition's unilateral handling of the special investigation law and did not attend the meeting. Yoo Sang-beom, the People Power Party's Judiciary Committee spokesperson, argued that "processing the bill as if stamping out cakes is not good for the people," emphasizing the need for sufficient deliberation time.
