335 Items Targeted for Export Ban to Russia
Japan Expands Sanctions in Response to Ukraine Invasion
The Japanese government decided on additional sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine on the 10th. On that day, the Cabinet (State Council) decided to ban the export of 335 items to Russia, including special vehicle engine parts and audio equipment, starting from the 23rd, according to reports by Kyodo News and Nihon Keizai Shimbun. Chemical substances such as capsaicin, which are used in the development of chemical weapons, were also included.
The Japanese government also added 11 Russian individuals, 29 organizations, and 3 banks to the list of asset freeze targets. It decided to ban exports to 31 organizations in six countries, including China, suspected of involvement in evading sanctions against Russia.
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stated at the G7 summit held online last month that Japan would consider additional sanctions against Russia. Yoshimasa Hayashi, Chief Cabinet Secretary and spokesperson for the Japanese government, said on the day, "Japan will also contribute to international efforts to resolve the issues surrounding Ukraine," and added, "We will continue to respond in cooperation with the international community, including the G7."
