Busan Gijang-gun (Governor Jeong Jong-bok) will carry out a winter mosquito larva control project until March to reduce the population of mosquitoes, which are vectors of various infectious diseases.
Winter larva control is known to be an efficient and economical pest control method, as removing mosquito larvae before they mature into adults can prevent 500 adult mosquitoes per larva.
Accordingly, the county will actively conduct the winter mosquito larva control project focusing on about 430 locations such as communal housing sump pits, public bathhouses, septic tanks in multi-use facilities, and sewers, which are warm underground spaces during winter, through cooperation between the public health center’s winter larva control team and voluntary resident quarantine groups from 189 villages.
In addition, a mosquito larva habitat reporting center operates year-round, and when a complaint is received, the public health center’s larva control team immediately investigates the larva habitat and applies eco-friendly larvicides, making every effort to prevent the outbreak of mosquito-borne infectious diseases in advance.
Besides chemical control by regularly spraying larvicides in places where water accumulates such as septic tanks, sewers, and puddles, eco-friendly physical control is simultaneously implemented by removing standing water from small containers like discarded tires, empty cans, and PET bottles around vacant lots or forests, and by burying puddles to eliminate larva habitats, thereby achieving pest control effects in various ways.
A representative from the Gijang-gun Public Health Center said, “Through this winter mosquito larva control project, we aim to significantly reduce the mosquito population in summer and prevent mosquito-borne infectious diseases in advance, thereby promoting the health of Gijang-gun residents.”
