Park Dae-sung (31), known as the 'random killer,' who is on trial for brutally stabbing a teenage girl walking late at night with a weapon, has appealed the first trial verdict that sentenced him to life imprisonment.
According to the legal community on the 10th, Park Dae-sung submitted an appeal to the Suncheon Branch of the Gwangju District Court through his lawyer that morning.
Park Dae-sung reportedly cited unfair sentencing as the reason for his appeal.
Park was indicted on charges of stabbing an 18-year-old girl walking in Jorye-dong, Suncheon-si, Jeollanam-do, to death without any clear reason at around 12:44 a.m. on September 26 last year, and for preparing to commit additional murders by visiting a pub and a karaoke room operated by a female owner.
The Criminal Division 1 of the Suncheon Branch of the Gwangju District Court (Chief Judge Kim Yong-gyu) sentenced Park Dae-sung to life imprisonment for murder and attempted murder charges and ordered him to wear an electronic location tracking device for 20 years.
The court stated, "The victim, an only daughter in her family who was preparing to take her first steps into society, died at a young age without being able to fully realize her dreams," adding, "The fear and helplessness the victim felt from the sudden attack are difficult to describe in words, and it seems unlikely that the bereaved family will easily heal from the immense mental pain and wounds or return to their daily lives."
Furthermore, the court pointed out, "The crime's outcome is severe, and the fact that the perpetrator targeted a person with no relation for no reason shows a very bad nature of the crime," and added, "The incident caused shock, fear, and anxiety among members of our society that someone could be killed in the middle of the city for no reason, yet the defendant showed no sincere remorse or reflection, even smiling when questioned by investigators."
Earlier, the police disclosed Park Dae-sung's personal information and mugshot during the investigation phase, considering the brutality of the crime and the severity of the damage.
