1,452 Newborns in Suncheon Last Year
A 2.9% Increase Compared to the Previous Year
Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) announced on the 10th that the number of newborns in the city last year was 1,452, the highest among the 22 cities and counties in Jeollanam-do.
Suncheon has recorded the highest number of births in Jeollanam-do for six consecutive years, and the number of newborns last year increased by 43 (a 2.9% increase) compared to the previous year.
Since the beginning of the 8th popularly elected administration, the city has established a Population and Birth Policy Team to address the low birthrate crisis and has been implementing practical support policies to ease the burden of childrearing, such as expanding pregnancy and childbirth support for the younger generation.
The main newly established policies this year include ▲birth allowance support ▲meal support during vacations for children using care centers ▲50% childcare fee support for foreign children in daycare centers, depending on age.
In addition, the city is offering various birth encouragement policies such as ▲expanding childbirth incentives up to 20 million KRW ▲increasing postpartum care cost support ▲elementary school entrance fee support ▲opening of Dalbit Children's Hospital ▲restructuring the 24-hour pediatric emergency medical system.
Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu of Suncheon stated, "Education, housing, and jobs are important to provide a nurturing environment where young people can feel comfortable having and raising children," and added, "We will continue to prepare various support measures to encourage childbirth and reduce the burden of childrearing costs."
Meanwhile, the population of Suncheon City at the end of 2024 is 276,329, with the proportion of young people at 33.7%, maintaining a higher youth population than the Jeollanam-do average of 28.3%.
