Court Sentences Park Daesung to Life Imprisonment for Murder of Teenage Girl in Suncheon

Court: "Indiscriminate Crime... No Remorse and Vicious Nature"

Park Daeseong (detained, 30) has been sentenced to life imprisonment for brutally murdering a teenage girl he had never met before with a weapon in Suncheon, Jeollanam-do.

According to the legal community on the 9th, the Criminal Division 1 of the Suncheon Branch of the Gwangju District Court (Presiding Judge Kim Yongkyu) sentenced Park Daeseong to life imprisonment and ordered him to wear an electronic monitoring device for 20 years in the first trial for charges of murder and attempted murder.

The court stated, "The victim, who was the only daughter in her family and was preparing to take her first steps into society, lost her life at a young age without even having the chance to pursue her dreams. The fear and helplessness experienced by the victim, who was suddenly attacked, are beyond words, and it seems unlikely that the bereaved family will be able to easily heal from the immense psychological pain and return to their daily lives."

The court continued, "The outcome of the crime is severe, and the nature of the crime is extremely poor as the perpetrator targeted a completely unrelated person without any reason. This incident has caused shock, fear, and anxiety in our society by showing that anyone can be murdered in the middle of the city for no reason, and yet the defendant showed no sincere reflection or remorse, even smiling during police questioning."

Park Daeseong, who ran a food delivery restaurant, was indicted for stabbing an 18-year-old woman multiple times with a weapon without clear reason while she was walking in Jorye-dong, Suncheon, Jeollanam-do, at 12:44 a.m. on September 26 last year, resulting in her death.

After committing the crime, Park Daeseong fled the scene, discarded the weapon, and was even captured on camera smiling leisurely. He was also found to have wandered around places like karaoke rooms with a weapon after the crime, intending to commit a second murder, leading to the charge of attempted murder as well.

Considering the brutality of the crime and the seriousness of the damage, the police disclosed Park Daeseong's personal information and mugshot during the investigation stage.
