Paju City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Kyung-il) announced on the 8th that it completed the renovation of a base facility to close the Yeonpung-ri sex trade district on the 7th, and installed four security closed-circuit televisions (CCTV) outside the base facility to ensure residents' safety and prevent crime.

Paju-si Installs Security CCTV in Red-Light District

Until now, the city had attempted several times to install security CCTV to close the sex trade district and alleviate residents' inconvenience, but illegal acts obstructing legitimate official duties?such as suicide threats from the district, high-altitude protests on utility poles, and occupation of work vehicles?along with concerns about safety accidents made CCTV installation difficult.

However, with the installation of security CCTV outside the base facility this time, the city has been able to secure the safety of residents, and Paju City expects it will serve as a strong warning against sex trade activities carried out under the cover of anonymity.

Mayor Kim Kyung-il of Paju said, “With CCTV installed not only at the main entrances of the sex trade district but also inside the district, the preemptive effect against illegal sex trade activities is expected to be significant,” adding, “With the completion of CCTV installation, the city’s policy to close the sex trade district has become even more solid, and the city will mobilize all administrative power to make every effort until the sex trade district is completely closed.”

Meanwhile, the city purchased one building to create a base facility within the sex trade district and completed renovation work at the end of last year. In the future, it will operate as a joint base facility of Paju City and Paju Police Station for closing the sex trade district, while also running anti-sex trade education centers and various cultural and artistic programs to transform the sex trade district into a citizen-friendly space.
