Allegations Online Claiming Dialogue Justifies the Vietnam War
Netflix's 'Squid Game' Season 2 is gaining great popularity in Vietnam, but some online public opinion is opposing certain lines related to the Vietnam War.
Local media Lao Dong reported on the 7th (local time) that since the release of 'Squid Game' Season 2 on Netflix, it has become a hot topic in Vietnam, but one line of dialogue is causing controversy.
The scene in question is from Episode 5 of Season 2, where the game participant 'Kang Dae-ho,' played by actor Kang Ha-neul, says, "My father was a veteran of the Wolnamjeon (Vietnam War)." Another participant, 'Park Jeong-bae' (Lee Seo-hwan), responds, "Your father is admirable." This scene spread on social networking services (SNS) locally, sparking backlash that it distorts the Vietnam War. Vietnamese netizens pointed out that it is a line that justifies the Vietnam War.
As a result, voices have emerged online calling for Netflix Vietnam to censor this scene or even suspend the service of 'Squid Game' Season 2 within Vietnam. There are also calls to boycott the drama.
Lao Dong stated, "Recently, an official from the Film Department of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam is reviewing and evaluating the controversy over the problematic dialogue," adding, "If a violation of film-related laws is confirmed, it will be dealt with according to the law." However, no specific details were mentioned regarding the direction of legal action if a violation occurs.
Meanwhile, according to the OTT ranking site FlixPatrol, 'Squid Game' Season 2 has maintained the number one spot in Netflix TV program viewership in Vietnam since its release until the day before yesterday.
