If a Child Saves 50,000 Won, the Government Provides 100,000 Won in Support
Namwon City in North Jeolla Province will expand the eligibility for the 'Didim Seed Account', a program that supports asset formation for children from vulnerable groups such as basic livelihood security households, starting this month.
According to the city on the 7th, the Didim Seed Account is a program in which, when a child saves a certain amount, the local government and the central government jointly contribute up to 100,000 KRW per month, matching twice the amount saved by the child (child 1: government 2). For example, if a child saves 50,000 KRW, the government provides 100,000 KRW, allowing for a maximum monthly deposit of 150,000 KRW.
Previously, eligibility was limited to children under 17 living in facilities, foster care children, and children from basic livelihood security households. Starting this year, children from near-poverty households and single-parent families are also eligible to join.
The accumulated funds can be used by the child after turning 18 for purposes such as tuition, obtaining technical qualifications, job training expenses, start-up support, housing, medical expenses, and marriage funds. Upon reaching the age of 24, the account can be closed without any restrictions on usage, making it very useful for asset formation to cover initial costs when entering society.
A city official stated, "We will do our best to discover and connect sponsors so that even children in difficult circumstances after joining the Didim Seed Account can receive support when entering society."
New applications can be submitted in person at the local Eup, Myeon, or Dong Administrative Welfare Center or online via the Bokjiro website.
