Last year, 2.6 tons of Gongju Chestnuts, which received the Korea Representative Brand Award under the brand name Gomanaru, will be exported to the United States.
The city of Gongju announced on the 7th that a shipment ceremony for Gongju Chestnuts was held at Sagok Nonghyup, attended by Mayor Choi Woncheol.
Gongju Chestnuts will be distributed through Heechangmulsan Co., Ltd. to six branches of H-Mart, the largest Korean-American supermarket chain in the eastern and western regions of the United States.
In 2023, the city signed an export business agreement with Heechangmulsan Co., Ltd. to enter the U.S. market with local agricultural products, and held promotional and sales events for Gongju’s agricultural specialties at the H-Mart LA branch.
The 8th Winter Gongju Roasted Chestnut Festival, which will be held at Geumgang Singwan Park in Gongju from the 16th to the 20th, will also take place simultaneously in the United States.
During the festival, various events such as Gongju Chestnut tasting, roasted chestnut grilling experience, roasted chestnut weight guessing, and roasted chestnut shell peeling will be held at six H-Mart branches in New York, New Jersey, and California, among other locations in the eastern and western United States.
Mayor Choi Woncheol said, "By holding simultaneous events in the United States during the Roasted Chestnut Festival, which has established itself as the representative winter festival of the central region, and the Korea Chestnut Industry Expo, we will have an opportunity to widely promote the excellence of Gongju Chestnuts. We will use this as an opportunity for Gongju to lead the domestic chestnut industry."
