Gyeongbuk National University College of Education Obituary: Teacher Kim Chunsik Honored with 'Korea Mathematics Education Award'

Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Kang Eun-hee) announced on the 3rd that Kim Chun-sik, a teacher at Kyungpook National University College of Education Affiliated High School, was selected as the recipient of the ‘2024 Korea Mathematics Education Award’ hosted by the Ministry of Education and organized by the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity.


The ‘Korea Mathematics Education Award’ has been selecting 10 awardees annually from elementary, middle, and high school math teachers nationwide since 2016 to discover and honor educators who have contributed to the development of mathematics education, thereby fostering pride among math teachers and enhancing the quality of math education through the dissemination of excellent teaching cases.

This year’s awardee, Kim Chun-sik, has focused on improving students’ logical, rational, and analytical thinking skills through in-depth math education such as project-based learning and concept-based inquiry learning using mathematical modeling.


In particular, he has practiced classes that cultivate creative and convergent thinking by integrating mathematics with humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and arts, achieving recognition by winning awards four times in the class sharing presentation contest (team competition).


Additionally, he has been actively involved in math education supporter groups, student evaluation support teams, consultants, and teacher research associations to ensure the stable establishment of the 2022 revised curriculum, Daegu future competency education, and the high school credit system, earning him this honor in recognition of his contributions.


Teacher Kim Chun-sik expressed his gratitude, saying, “Receiving this great award makes me feel more responsible, and I will devote myself even more to educational activities that help students develop an interest in mathematics.”


Daegu Superintendent Kang Eun-hee said, “I congratulate Teacher Kim Chun-sik for being recognized for his dedicated efforts to revitalize mathematics education,” and added, “We will continue to implement various policies such as supporting teacher training to strengthen teachers’ capabilities.”
