Gwangju Nam-gu (District Mayor Kim Byungnae) announced on the 3rd that it will officially launch a new student admission support fund and a free high school education expense support project to realize universal educational welfare for elementary, middle, and high school students in the region.
This project will be funded with 600 million won from the district budget. The number of new students entering elementary, middle, high schools, and special schools in the region this year is estimated to be 7,412.
Nam-gu will provide 379.84 million won from the district budget for admission preparation support, according to the cost-sharing ratio with the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education, Gwangju City, and local governments. Each new elementary school student will receive 100,000 won, and each new middle and high school student will receive 300,000 won.
This amount is expected to be useful for purchasing clothing such as school uniforms and gym clothes, as well as books and smart devices for remote classes.
Applications for the support fund will begin around March.
In addition, first to third-year students attending 17 high schools in the region will receive approximately 1.75 million won per person as free education expenses.
This is to support tuition fees, school operation support fees, and the purchase of textbooks.
The beneficiaries are 9,298 first to third-year high school students in the district, and the district budget allocated for the free high school education expense support project is about 229.1 million won.
An official from Nam-gu stated, "We will do our best to promote related projects so that all students can receive education equally."
