A former Gwangju City Council member, who had been serving a prison sentence after being convicted in the first trial for bribery related to the 'purchase-type project' of converting private kindergartens into public ones, has died.

According to Gwangju Correctional Institution and other sources on the 3rd, the former council member, referred to as A, complained of chest pain due to myocardial infarction on the morning of the previous day. He was transported to a hospital and underwent emergency surgery, but passed away during the procedure.

A was on trial in the appellate court after being sentenced to six years in prison in the first trial for receiving a bribe of 62 million won from the director of a private kindergarten in May 2021, in connection with the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education's 'purchase-type project' to convert private kindergartens into public institutions.
