Ko Hak-soo, Chairperson of the Personal Information Protection Commission, announced on the 3rd that they will establish AI·Data 2.0 policies to enable the use of personal information necessary for artificial intelligence (AI) development.
In his New Year's address, Chairperson Ko stated, "Without the valuable use of personal information, it is difficult to expect the development of new technologies and new industries such as generative AI."
He emphasized, "We will focus our capabilities on revising personal information legislation and policies that respond to the AI era," adding, "A foundation must be established for Korea's AI and data ecosystem to make a leap forward."
Chairperson Ko said, "On the premise of appropriate safety measures, we will open the way to use personal information for socially necessary AI development and promote legal amendments."
Furthermore, starting with the medical and telecommunications sectors, he pledged to expand the MyData system to produce tangible results that the public can feel.
He also plans to strengthen the commission’s core role as a personal information control tower. Chairperson Ko stated, "We will strictly investigate and sanction personal information leaks and infringement incidents," and added, "We will enhance investigative capabilities through the establishment of a digital forensic lab, operation of an investigation information system, and formation of a dedicated litigation team."
The 'Global Privacy Assembly (GPA)' will be held in Seoul this coming September. Chairperson Ko remarked, "This will be an important opportunity for a new flow of discussion reflecting Asia’s perspective to emerge in the personal information regulatory debates that have so far been centered on Europe and the United States."
He encouraged, "To meet the expectations of the public, the commission should actively respond to personal information issues and create policy outcomes that the public can experience."
