A 'vertical rainbow' was captured in the sky near Muan International Airport in Jeollanam-do, where the Jeju Air passenger plane disaster occurred. Netizens shed tears, saying, "It seems the victims are ascending to the sky," and "It looks like they are giving a final farewell to their families."

On the 31st, the third day since the passenger plane disaster, an Instagram post shared a video about one minute long with the caption, "A rainbow path has opened in the sky near Muan Airport." Netizen A, who uploaded the video, said that while driving near Muan Airport, they noticed a beam of light piercing through the clouds and extending vertically in the direction of the airport. A explained, "Seeing the vertically stretched rainbow, I thought it was unusual," and added, "It was so beautiful that I was mesmerized, and then I realized it was in the direction of Muan Airport, so I started filming." They continued, "I wondered if the victims who lost their lives in the sudden accident were ascending to the sky," and expressed regret that "the beautiful colors of the rainbow were not fully captured in the video." They also said, "The reality is so tragic that I still can't believe it. I hope the bereaved families find comfort in seeing that rainbow. I pray that the victims rest in peace in a good place."

Netizens who saw the video mourned the victims with comments such as, "It seems the sky opened a door so the victims could rest peacefully," "It’s so sad, like they are giving a final farewell to their families," "I hope they follow the beautiful rainbow path to a better place," "I hope this brings even a small comfort to the bereaved families," "My heart is heavy. May they rest in peace," and "I've never seen such a rainbow before. Surely, the victims are letting us know they are okay."

Meanwhile, the accident occurred on the morning of the 29th of last month when Jeju Air flight 7C2216, departing from Bangkok, Thailand at 9:03 AM and heading to Muan International Airport, attempted a belly landing due to a landing gear malfunction and collided with a concrete embankment at the end of the runway. According to fire authorities, out of 181 passengers on board, 179 died, excluding 2 crew members. As of 7 AM on the 3rd, the recovery authorities have completed the handover procedures for the bodies of 42 of the 179 victims. Authorities expect the number of victims handed over to increase as DNA identification results are being received sequentially from the National Forensic Service.
