Seonsung Joon, Seocho District Mayor, and Ho-kwon Choi, Yeongdeungpo District Mayor, Join Hands to Establish 'Spatial Innovation Bureau' and 'Future City Bureau'

The New Year of 2025 has dawned.

Each autonomous district in Seoul shows determination to improve conditions and solve challenges through new resolutions.

In particular, Jeon Seong-su, Mayor of Seocho-gu, and Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, have attracted attention by demonstrating their will to vigorously address regional issues through new organizational restructuring this year.

Jeon Seong-su, Mayor of Seocho-gu, established the ‘Spatial Innovation Bureau’ to transform Seocho’s urban space into an innovative complex space where nature, economy, transportation, and leisure harmonize.

The establishment of the ‘Spatial Innovation Bureau’ was based on the judgment that a dedicated organization is necessary to accelerate key projects of the 8th elected term and to effectively promote large-scale projects as complex developments such as the Yangjae Station GTX-C transfer center begin in earnest.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, established the Future City Bureau. It combines the Future Space Division, which manages public buildings including the new government office, the Garden City Division to strengthen the role as a leading autonomous district for garden cities, and the Youth Policy Division to expand the future of youth.

The ‘Spatial Innovation Bureau’ is organized into five departments: Transportation Administration, Urban Planning, Public Infrastructure, Green City, and Garden Leisure, with the policy to create the best infrastructure where urban, transportation, greenery, and leisure harmonize.

Various transportation modes will be interconnected to enhance the efficiency and convenience of movement, and innovative urban planning measures will be prepared to enjoy nature and leisure life even in the city center, aiming to make Seocho a pleasant place to live.

In particular, the newly established ‘Garden Leisure Division’ will be responsible for various projects to meet the changing leisure demands of residents and to create a ‘Garden City Seocho’ where nature can be enjoyed anytime and anywhere.

Along with the designation of the Yangjae AI Special Zone, the ‘Yangjae ICT Innovation District TF Team’ was renamed the ‘Advanced Industry Team,’ and a ‘Landscape Design Team’ was newly established to improve the urban landscape.

Mayor Jeon Seong-su said, “This organizational restructuring is the beginning of innovatively transforming Seocho’s future urban space,” adding, “We will do our best to ensure that large-scale projects such as the Yangjae Station GTX-C transfer center and the complex development of government offices proceed effectively.”

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, held the first-ever ‘Garden City’ proclamation ceremony among Seoul’s autonomous districts last May.

This was a strategic move to make the creation of a garden city suited to the new era a key word of the 8th elected term, breaking away from the factory image of Mullae-dong.

The district accelerated its movement toward a garden city Yeongdeungpo by successively promoting projects such as creating a flower garden in front of the district office in Mullae-dong, establishing a moss park in the park in front of the district office, and creating a waterway garden in the former Ankara Park in Yeouido.

Along with this, the Future Space Division was created to manage public buildings including the new government office construction.

Additionally, efforts continue to stimulate youth interest in science and technology by aligning youth futures with science and technology, including visits to the National Gwacheon Science Museum, Samsung Electronics headquarters, Japan’s ZAXA Tsukuba Space Center, Taiwan’s TSMC headquarters, and the National Space Center (TASA).

The district appointed ▲ Seo Yeon-nam as Future City Bureau Chief ▲ Jang Yoon-seok as Future Space Division Chief ▲ Lee Eun-kyung as Youth Policy Division Chief ▲ Jeong Seong-moon as Garden City Division Chief.

Jeon Seong-su, Mayor of Seocho-gu, and Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, are alumni of Seoul National University and passed the administrative examination. They have a close relationship, having worked at Seoul City Hall and the Blue House. They also have unique experience serving as overseas consuls.

Because of this, the two mayors are expected to be closer than anyone else and to vigorously implement the challenges they face in 2025.
