Kwon Seong-dong on Submission of Internal Revolt Investigation Plan: "Democratic Party Engages in Political Strife Even During Mourning Period"

Kwon Seong-dong Demands Veto Power Over Constitutional Court Justice Appointment
Urges Acting Chief Choi Sang-mok "Not to Align with Democratic Party"
Full Support for Jeju Air Disaster Victims' Families
"Will Provide Support Similar to Itaewon Disaster Victims"

Kwon Seong-dong, floor leader of the People Power Party, emphasized on the 31st regarding the submission of the 'Special Committee for the National Investigation into the Truth of the Internal Conflict through the Declaration of Martial Law by the Yoon Seok-yeol Government' plan to the National Assembly plenary session, stating, "We condemn the behavior of the Democratic Party of Korea, which does not stop political strife even during the national mourning period."

At the People Power Party members' meeting held at the National Assembly in the afternoon, Floor Leader Kwon said that the plan for the internal conflict national investigation was submitted to the plenary session. He opened by saying, "The prosecution, police, and the High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Agency (PCA) are conducting competitive investigations regarding the declaration of martial law," and "Today, an unprecedented arrest warrant for the president, which is highly controversial for its illegality, was issued."

He continued, "While such investigations are underway, the opposition party is calling for both permanent and general special prosecutors, and on top of that, they are pushing for a national investigation. It is said that the Democratic Party plans to accuse several members of parliament of inciting internal rebellion," adding, "This is a political calculation to destroy the conservative party by indiscriminately accusing everyone they dislike of inciting internal rebellion, without regard for the national mourning period."

He urged Choi Sang-mok, Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, to "make maintaining the status quo of state affairs the basic policy of exercising authority." This is interpreted as a response to some reports that Acting Prime Minister Choi proposed appointing three constitutional court justices before Han Deok-su's suspension from duty as Acting President.

Floor Leader Kwon said, "Appointing three of the nine constitutional court justices without the agreement of the National Assembly and both ruling and opposition parties constitutes a significant change in the status quo," and "I hope Acting Prime Minister Choi does not sympathize with the Democratic Party's unconstitutional and illegal impeachment politics."

He also reiterated his intention to actively cooperate in responding to the Jeju Air passenger plane disaster that occurred at Muan International Airport in Jeollanam-do. He stated, "The party will request the government to take special measures for accident recovery and support for the victims' families," and "We will prepare support measures including psychological counseling and healing leave for workers, following the precedent of the Itaewon disaster." He instructed party members to "be mindful of words and actions that could disrupt the mourning atmosphere."
