The business community in Gwangju and Jeonnam has collectively canceled their New Year's greeting events to mourn the Jeju Air passenger plane disaster, which resulted in 179 casualties.
The Gwangju Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Chairman Han Sangwon) announced on the 31st that it has decided to cancel the New Year's greeting event that was scheduled to be held jointly with the Gwangju Employers Federation.
The Gwangju Chamber of Commerce and Industry held a board meeting the previous afternoon and stated, "We made this decision to express our condolences for the Jeju Air passenger plane disaster that occurred at Muan International Airport," and added, "We will fly flags at half-mast until January 4, the end of the national mourning period, pray for the souls of the victims of this tragic accident, and extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families who are in great sorrow."
The Gwangju Employers Federation will postpone its New Year's greeting event. On the day of the cancellation, the federation plans to organize a joint memorial visit for the business community.
The Gwangju Employers Federation intends to reschedule the event at a later date, but the first joint New Year's greeting event between the two organizations has been canceled.
The Mokpo, Yeosu, Suncheon, and Gwangyang Chambers of Commerce and Industry have also canceled their New Year's greeting events.
The Mokpo Chamber of Commerce and Industry had planned to hold its event on January 2 next year, while the Yeosu, Suncheon, and Gwangyang chambers were scheduled for January 3.
On the day of the cancellation, the Mokpo Chamber of Commerce and Industry will deliver relief supplies along with a joint memorial visit.
