Sacheon-si Cancels All Events During National Mourning Period for Passenger Plane Accident

From December 29 to January 4, 2025, for 7 days

Sacheon City in Gyeongnam announced on the 31st that it has decided to cancel all city-hosted events such as the year-end sunset and New Year's sunrise festivals scheduled during the national mourning period due to the Jeju Air passenger plane accident.


Mayor Park Dong-sik held an emergency executive meeting on the morning of the same day regarding the Jeju Air passenger plane accident that occurred at Muan International Airport in Jeonnam, and decided to fully cancel the '2024 Year-End Bell Ringing Ceremony' event. Additionally, the '2025 Samcheonpo Bridge Sunrise' event will also have programs such as fireworks canceled.


However, since many citizens voluntarily gather to watch the sunrise, the city will focus on safety management and traffic convenience for citizens according to the existing safety management plan.

It was especially decided to express condolences and mourning for the victims and their families. The national mourning period lasts for seven days, from December 29 to January 4, 2025.


Sacheon City had planned to hold the '2024 Year-End Bell Ringing Ceremony' at the Sacheon Citizen Great Bell Pavilion located in the Sunset Plaza of City Hall at 9 PM on the 31st, and the '2025 Sunrise' event around Samcheonpo Bridge on January 1.


Mayor Park said, "I pray for the repose of the souls of those who perished in this passenger plane accident and offer my deepest condolences and sympathy to the bereaved families," adding, "We will share the pain of the victims and their families together with the citizens."


He continued, "Many people have experienced great shock and sorrow due to this accident, and it is important for citizens to have a heart of mourning rather than celebration," adding, "During the national mourning period, other public events will also be restrained, and we plan to focus solely on the safety management of citizens."


Meanwhile, the Sacheon City Facilities Management Corporation has decided to fully cancel the 'Early Operation Event of Sacheon Sea Cable Car' scheduled for January 1, 2025.


The corporation decided to fully cancel the early operation event of the Sacheon Sea Cable Car to join the nationwide mourning atmosphere for the Muan International Airport passenger plane disaster that occurred on December 29 and to consider the bereaved families.


Director Han Jae-cheon said, "I express my deepest condolences to the deceased and their families and wish everyone a safe and peaceful New Year."
