Renovation of Aging Facilities into Content Exhibition Spaces Aligned with Modern Trends

The Haengju Battle Memorial Hall has been operating without remodeling since its establishment in 1980, and due to outdated internal facilities that do not meet the exhibition trends of modern museums, visitor numbers had declined.

Accordingly, the city carried out a content renewal project for the Haengju Battle Memorial Hall to reorganize the space in a way that easily conveys the meaning and historical value of the Haengju Battle and stimulates interest, making it a must-visit essential course for visitors.

The city promoted the renewal work as part of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s ecological green tourism revitalization project (regeneration of aging tourist facilities incorporating cultural content) called the ‘New Haengju Fortress Complete Conquest’ project.

Through this project, the strategic importance of Haengju Fortress since the Three Kingdoms period is emphasized, with added guidance and explanations about the weapons used during the Haengju Battle, and immersive videos capturing the intense 12 hours of the battle are provided.

Additionally, the project focused on building an interactive exhibition space that uses the story of the Haengju Battle to remind visitors of its historical value and enhance national pride, attracting visitors’ interest. Content production and internal space reorganization were carried out over approximately four months.

Upon entering the newly reopened Haengju Battle Memorial Hall, the exhibition space is divided into three zones.

Zone 1 of the memorial hall exhibits and provides information about the Haengju Battle, General Gwon Yul, General Jo Gyeong, and the main weapons that led to victory in the Haengju Battle. Zone 2 offers immersive videos of the fierce Haengju Battle. The final Zone 3 is composed of interactive content that allows visitors to experience the battle from the perspective of a Joseon army soldier, enabling a vivid viewing and experiential opportunity.

A Goyang Special City official stated, “The Haengju Battle Memorial Hall has completed remodeling and is accelerating preparations for reopening. Starting January 1 next year, it will offer visitors to Haengju Fortress a meaningful time to reflect on the history and significance of the Haengju Battle.”
