Participation in Mourning Atmosphere for Victims Until National Mourning Period Ends
Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam has completely canceled the year-end and New Year's sunrise events that were scheduled for the 31st and January 1st.
On the 30th, the city held an emergency meeting regarding the Jeju Air passenger plane disaster that occurred the previous day at Muan International Airport in Jeonnam, and announced that this decision was made to join in the atmosphere of condolence and mourning for the victims.
During the period, the city had planned to hold the New Year's Eve bell-ringing events (at the Great Bell Pavilion behind Changwon Central Library, in front of Koa Yang at Buljong Street in Masanhappo-gu, and the bell pavilion inside Jinhae District Office) and the sunrise events (at 3·15 Marine Nuri Park, Jinhaeru, etc.).
Hong Nampyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City, said, “In the new year, we plan to spend time quietly while praying for the repose of all the victims,” and added, “We will do our best to provide all support for the disaster recovery.”
Meanwhile, although the sunrise events have been canceled, safety management personnel will be deployed as originally planned due to concerns about crowd congestion.
