Starting with Mendelssohn Symphony No.4 'Italian' at Sejong Center Grand Theater on January 10 next year
Kim Seohyun to perform Sibelius Violin Concerto as soloist
Violinist Kim Seohyun, aged 16, will perform as a soloist at the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra's (SPO) 2025 New Year's Concert.
The SPO will hold the "2025 Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra New Year's Concert" on January 10th at 7:30 PM at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts Grand Theater. Next year marks the 20th anniversary of the foundation's establishment and the 80th anniversary of the orchestra's founding.
At this meaningful New Year's concert, the first piece performed will be Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4 "Italian." In the second half, the program includes Sibelius's Violin Concerto, Johann Strauss II's operetta "Die Fledermaus" Overture, and "The Blue Danube."
The first piece, "Italian," was composed by Mendelssohn inspired by his travels in Italy and is bright and vibrant.
The first piece of the second half, Sibelius's Violin Concerto, is his only concerto. It is a masterpiece that harmoniously combines orchestral tone poems and romantic violin concerto elements, featuring a dramatic contrast between restrained melancholy and explosive passion, lyrical sensitivity, and brilliant virtuoso technique.
Kim Seohyun, who will perform Sibelius's Violin Concerto, has recently stood out by winning multiple international competitions. She won the 2021 Eug?ne Ysa?e International Music Competition and the Leonid Kogan International Violin Competition, and in 2022, she set the record as the youngest winner ever at the Thomas and Evon Cooper International Competition held in Oberlin, USA. In 2023, at the age of 14, she became the youngest winner in history at the prestigious Tibor Varga International Competition in Switzerland.
The SPO will conclude the New Year's concert with some of the most famous works by Johann Strauss II, known as the "Waltz King."
The operetta "Die Fledermaus" is the most popular operetta left by Johann Strauss II. Especially, the "Overture" of Die Fledermaus is bright and lively and is frequently performed. The final piece, "The Blue Danube," is Johann Strauss II's most popular waltz.
