Kwon Seong-dong, Acting Leader of the People Power Party and Floor Leader, formed a task force (TF) on the 29th to manage the aftermath of the Muan Airport accident and decided to implement comprehensive measures including accident management, fact-finding, and support for the bereaved families.
On the same day, Kwon held an emergency issue meeting at the National Assembly and announced that they would form a Muan passenger plane crash accident management TF chaired by Kwon Young-jin, the People Power Party’s ranking member of the National Assembly Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee.
The TF members consist of People Power Party lawmakers from the National Assembly’s Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee, the Public Administration and Security Committee, and the Health and Welfare Committee.
After the meeting, Acting Leader Kwon, along with TF members, visited the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters to discuss the accident details and management plans, and decided to visit the Muan site via train through Gwangju at around 7:30 a.m. on the 30th.
While Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, headed to the site immediately on the same day, Acting Leader Kwon plans to visit the site a day later.
Regarding this, Acting Leader Kwon explained, "From the perspective that 'today we must focus all efforts on accident management,' the party decided not to visit the site because visiting the site from the party, not the executive branch, could potentially interfere with accident management," adding, "It has been customary not to visit on the day of the disaster in past emergencies as well."
Instead, the People Power Party’s Jeonnam Provincial Party Chairman and Muan District Party Chairman will visit the site to check whether the accident management is being properly carried out and identify any shortcomings, and will communicate with the central party, Acting Leader Kwon explained.
Regarding Acting Leader Kwon’s schedule on the 30th, he added, "He will listen to opinions on accident management and measures to prevent recurrence, and visit to console the bereaved families." Lawmaker Kwon Young-se is also scheduled to visit the Muan site again immediately after assuming the position of Emergency Committee Chairman on the afternoon of the 30th.
Furthermore, Acting Leader Kwon pointed out the unfortunate situation of key government officials who are supposed to lead accident management being impeached and leaving a vacuum, saying, "It is very regrettable that there is a vacancy of key ministers during this national emergency," and urged, "The ruling and opposition parties should stop political strife and devote all efforts to managing the situation."
