Drunk Boyfriend Asked, "Drive Me to Seoul"
Woman Fined for Encouraging Drunk Driving
A woman in her 20s who caused her boyfriend to drive under the influence by asking him to drive her home was sentenced to a fine of 5 million won.
On the 28th, the Criminal Division 3 of Cheongju District Court (Presiding Judge Kim Kyung-chan) sentenced Ms. A, who was tried for instigating drunk driving under the Road Traffic Act. Mr. B (in his 20s), who drove while intoxicated, was sentenced to one year in prison with a two-year probation.
On May 2nd at around 7:18 a.m., Ms. A asked Mr. B, with whom she had been drinking at a hotel parking lot in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon, to drive her to a relative’s house in Seoul. Mr. B initially refused the request, but when Ms. A, who was living with him, said she would no longer share utility expenses such as gas bills, he eventually took the wheel while heavily intoxicated.
Mr. B drove about 50 meters after leaving the hotel parking lot before being caught in a police crackdown.
Presiding Judge Kim stated, "Defendant A actively encouraged her boyfriend to drive under the influence, but her remorse was taken into account in sentencing. However, in Defendant B’s case, the fact that he reoffended despite having two prior drunk driving convictions was considered an unfavorable factor."
