On the afternoon of the 27th, Yangsan City in Gyeongnam held an International Safe City Certification Ceremony at the Yangsan City Hall main conference room, attended by over 200 people including officials from the International Safe City Certification Center, related organizations, safety groups, and citizens.
The Yangsan City International Safe City Certification project has been underway since 2019 to foster an advanced safety culture among citizens and to create an internationally recognized safe city image certified by the International Safe City Certification Center, thereby realizing a "flawless safety, safety-first city."
In 2020, through the first-year research service, the city diagnosed the current safety status of citizens and established a basic plan for the International Safe City project. Since 2021, based on damage data, the city has strived to make a practical contribution to citizen safety by operating subcommittee working groups to improve safety vulnerabilities, and in September 2023, submitted the certification application to the International Safe City Certification Center.
Based on the efforts and achievements so far, the city underwent the first on-site inspection in June 2024 and the second inspection in November, and on November 15th, received certification from the International Safe City Certification Center.
Being certified as an International Safe City does not mean the city has reached a perfectly safe level, but rather that it is a city prepared to make sufficient efforts with its citizens for community safety and to practice sustainability in safety.
The International Safe City Certification Ceremony began with a performance by the Yangsan City Choir, followed by awards for contributors to the certification, commemorative and congratulatory speeches, signing of the certification agreement, presentation of the certification plaque, and a commemorative photo session.
Reza Mohammadi, chairman of the International Safe City Certification Center (ISCCC) and head of the Yangsan City International Safe City certification review team, said in a congratulatory message, “Through the on-site inspection, we confirmed the tremendous efforts and achievements Yangsan City has made over the past five years,” adding, “This was only possible through Mayor Na Dong-yeon’s firm administrative philosophy, which prioritizes citizen safety as the most important value and strives to guarantee citizens’ happy lives.”
Mayor Na Dong-yeon emphasized in his commemorative speech, “This International Safe City certification is an opportunity for our joint efforts and passion to be recognized worldwide and for Yangsan City to grow as a safer city,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to create a safer city for citizens through ongoing efforts and participation in safety promotion projects.”
