City, Gyeongbuk Province, and Pohang St. Mary's Hospital Collaborate to Introduce Advanced Medical Technology and Improve Emergency Medical Services
On the 26th, Pohang City held a blessing ceremony to commemorate the completion of the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Center at the main building of Pohang St. Mary's Hospital.

The ceremony was attended by Mayor Lee Kang-deok, City Council Chairman Kim Il-man, heads of the Nam-gu and Buk-gu health centers, and many other officials.
Due to the unique characteristics of the Pohang area, which is closely linked to the steel industrial complex, and the East Coast region where many people work in marine and fishing industries, the need for hyperbaric oxygen therapy for special diseases such as gas poisoning, decompression sickness (diving sickness), and burns has been continuously raised.
Accordingly, Pohang City, together with Gyeongbuk Province and Pohang St. Mary's Hospital, established the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Center to promote the health of local residents and strengthen emergency medical response capabilities.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a treatment method that supplies oxygen to the body through breathing in a high-pressure environment to promote the recovery of damaged tissues. It is known to be particularly effective for various diseases such as decompression sickness, gas poisoning, diabetic foot ulcers, and side effects after radiation therapy.
The Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Center at Pohang St. Mary's Hospital is the largest in the province, equipped with three hyperbaric oxygen chambers: single-person, two-person, and multi-person (more than 10 people). With the opening of this center, Pohang St. Mary's Hospital has established a rare treatment infrastructure in the region and has positioned itself as a key emergency medical institution alongside the Gyeongbuk East Coast Regional Emergency Medical Center and Pediatric Emergency Medical Center.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, "The Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Center will provide advanced medical services not only for industrial accidents and health issues of special occupational groups but also for general patients. With the installation of cutting-edge medical facilities, we will improve the quality of life for citizens and fulfill the role of a central medical institution covering the entire Gyeongbuk East Coast region."
