27th Homigot Korean Peninsula Sunrise Festival Final Report Meeting Held
Mayor Lee Gang-deok, "Will Ensure Thorough Safety Management to Prevent Accidents"
On the 26th, Pohang City held a final briefing session at the city hall's main conference room to ensure the successful hosting of the '27th Homigot Korean New Year Sunrise Festival.'
Presided over by Mayor Lee Kang-deok, the briefing was attended by over 40 participants from related departments, Pohang Maritime Police Station, Pohang South and North Police Stations, South and North Fire Stations, South Model Drivers Association, Maritime Accident Rescue Support Team, and other related organizations and support groups.
The session began with a final preparation report from the Pohang Cultural Foundation regarding the festival, followed by departmental reports on parking management and traffic measures, crackdown on street vendors and elimination of overcharging, and safety management at major sunrise viewing spots.
Additionally, the final status of the event was reviewed, including discussions on collaboration between related agencies and support groups to ensure a safe festival.
Marking its 27th year, the Homigot Korean New Year Sunrise Festival will expand its attractions and entertainment by resuming, after five years, year-end programs such as a random play dance with popular YouTuber ‘Nihu,’ the Wolwolicheongcheong Grand Festival combining B-boy and EDM, and a busking festival for tourists visiting Homigot from New Year's Eve.
At midnight, a countdown event featuring Grand Robotics?highlighting Pohang’s identity as a steel city fused with technology and art?along with a mini fireworks show will be held. The grand 2025 Eulsa year New Year's sunrise and the announcement of the New Year's four-character idiom will unite 500,000 citizens.
To differentiate from other local governments’ sunrise events, starting in 2025, the Homigot Sunrise Festival will feature the signature program ‘Eo~heung (興) Korean Performance,’ a sunrise beomgut ritual, followed by a tightrope walking performance set against the backdrop of the New Year's sunrise.
Side events include the 2025 Rice Cake Soup Sharing, which has become a representative program of the Homigot Sunrise Festival, various experience programs operated by local small business owners, and the ‘Homigot Food Night Market’ to warmly counter the cold wave.
Notably, this year’s sunrise event has enhanced safety by installing TFS tents and air domes to provide various experience programs while preparing for strong winds and cold weather.
Safety fences will be installed along the high-risk coastal areas within the event site, and safety personnel will be concentrated to prevent any accidents from occurring.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok emphasized, “As many sunrise tourists are expected to visit Pohang despite the cold weather, we will do our utmost to ensure thorough safety management,” adding, “We will focus administrative efforts until the very end to enhance tourist satisfaction with diverse sunrise content and to help revitalize the local economy.”
