Gwangju City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Bang Se-hwan) announced on the 26th that it received the Governor of Gyeonggi Province's Commendation as the best institution in the field of wildfire prevention in recognition of its active contribution to wildfire prevention and suppression in 2024.

The wildfire prevention merit award, hosted by Gyeonggi Province, is an award given to civilians, public officials, institutions, and organizations who have dedicated themselves to wildfire prevention and suppression to protect forest resources and prevent damage to citizens' property and lives.
This year, Gwangju City minimized forest damage through prompt initial response and cooperation with related wildfire agencies during wildfire incidents. The city secured a budget of 1.6 billion KRW to lead wildfire prevention efforts by introducing drone wildfire monitoring and suppression systems during the spring and autumn wildfire caution periods, extending the lease period of wildfire suppression helicopters, holding inspection meetings with related wildfire agencies hosted by Gwangju City, providing wildfire prevention education during town and village chiefs' meetings, and promoting additional installation of surveillance cameras in wildfire-prone areas for early wildfire detection.
Mayor Bang Se-hwan stated, “Since forests account for 65% of Gwangju City's total area, we ask for citizens' attention and caution for wildfire prevention,” and added, “We will do our best to promote wildfire prevention and suppression projects to protect citizens' property and lives as well as forest resources.”
