Ministry of Science and ICT Announces Survey Results
28.9% Revenue Growth Compared to Previous Year
"Support Measures for Small Businesses to Be Established"
The revenue of the domestic digital creator media industry surpassed 5 trillion won last year. The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Radio Promotion Association announced the results of the 'Digital Creator Media Industry Survey' on the 26th.
Reviewing the status of the domestic digital creator media industry last year, the number of businesses was 13,514, revenue was 5.3159 trillion won, the number of employees was 42,378, and each business produced an average of 58.1 pieces of content annually.
The Ministry of Science and ICT stated, "We confirmed the rapid growth of the domestic digital creator media industry," and added, "This suggests that the sector is establishing itself as a major pillar of the media market."
First, the number of businesses was 13,514, an increase of 21.5% compared to the previous year. By sector, there were △ 10,007 in video production and production support (23.8% increase) △ 2,132 in advertising and marketing (0.7% decrease) △ 1,232 in management (MCN) (49.9% increase) △ 143 in online video sharing platforms (101.4% increase).
Total revenue was 5.3159 trillion won, growing 28.9% year-on-year. By sector, revenue was △ 2.0737 trillion won in video production and production support (30.5% increase) △ 1.7663 trillion won in advertising and marketing (12.6% increase) △ 753.1 billion won in management (MCN) (14.1% increase) △ 722.9 billion won in online video sharing platforms (135.3% increase). The average revenue per company was 390 million won, with the majority of companies (65.4%, 8,838 companies) earning less than 500 million won.
The number of employees was 42,378, a 19.8% increase from the previous year, but small businesses with fewer than five employees accounted for 83.5%, indicating that the industry is mainly operated by small-scale businesses. Additionally, youth aged 30 or younger made up 58.7% of the workforce.
Businesses producing their own content accounted for 74% of the total, producing an average of 58.1 pieces annually. The genres of content were △ lifestyle such as fashion and beauty (36.5%) △ information delivery such as education and lectures (26.6%) △ hobbies such as travel (22.7%). The platforms distributing the content were △ YouTube (68.1%) △ Instagram (10.8%) △ Naver TV (7.3%).
Choi Junho, Director of Broadcasting Promotion Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, "The digital creator media industry is establishing itself as a core pillar of media, creating new business models and employment," and added, "Based on this survey, we plan to prepare various support measures to ensure sustainable growth for small-scale creators and businesses."
