'Safety First' Mapo-gu Wins Presidential Award at Safety Culture Awards

Nationwide Local Government Ranked 1st, Secures 300 Million Won Special Grant
Positive Reviews for Safety Mapo Hotline, Red Road Safety Management, and AI Crowd Density Management System

'Safety First' Mapo-gu Wins Presidential Award at Safety Culture Awards

Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Kang-su) received the Presidential Citation, equivalent to first place among local governments nationwide, at the 2024 Safety Culture Awards hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, securing a special grant of 300 million KRW.

The 'Safety Culture Awards' is the highest honor in the safety field, recognizing outstanding organizations and individuals who have contributed to the formation of a safety culture, awarding government honors, and sharing excellent safety culture cases.

In March last year, Mapo-gu established the 'Safety Mapo Hotline.' This is an emergency contact system prepared with related agencies to enable prompt on-site dispatch, rescue of the injured, and prevention of accident spread in the event of a disaster.

The agreement involved Mapo-gu, Mapo Police Station, Mapo Fire Station, the 56th Army Division Mapo Battalion, Seoul Western Education Support Office, Korea Electric Power Corporation Mapo Yongsan Branch, KT Seodaemun Branch, Korea Electrical Safety Corporation Seoul Regional Headquarters, and Korea Gas Safety Corporation Seoul Western Branch, all working together to protect the lives and property of local residents.

In practice, when accidents such as fires or road collapses occurred in the area, Mapo-gu immediately activated the 'Safety Mapo Hotline' to share disaster situations with related agencies in real time and responded swiftly to disasters that could escalate or become complex through close cooperation.

Safety management of densely crowded areas also received high praise. Mapo Red Road is a tourist attraction where nearly 100,000 people gather during Halloween and year-end holidays. Accordingly, Mapo-gu set up an on-site situation room composed of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Mapo Police Station, and Mapo Fire Station at Red Road and conducted joint on-site inspections to prevent safety accidents.

Additionally, the AI crowd density management system proactively introduced by Mapo-gu effectively analyzed crowd density in real time and broadcast guidance announcements.

Furthermore, the active voluntary participation of residents, including members of professional organizations, in safety guardian roles was highly evaluated.

Moreover, Mapo-gu is concentrating administrative efforts on strengthening residents' safety by being the first autonomous district in Seoul to introduce an AI flood prevention system in underground passages and installing intelligent CCTVs in parks and alleys.

Park Kang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “Receiving the Presidential Award at the Safety Culture Awards is a meaningful achievement created by the united efforts of Mapo-gu, related agencies, and residents under the belief that ‘overreaction is the best method when it comes to safety.’ We will continue to do our best to create a safe Mapo where everyone can live with peace of mind.”
